Chip Seal
Chip Seal is an affordable alternative to asphalt or concrete pavement.
It is a unique process where hot liquid asphalt is applied to existing stone.
A layer of stone is then placed on top of the asphalt and then rolled to
lock the stone into place.
Benefits:
• Cost Effective.
• Preserve the stone in your driveway.
• Eliminate rutting and washouts.
• Prevent water from deteriorating your sub-base.
• Improve traction.
Quick Facts:
• Can be applied as a single or double coat.
• A double coat may be necessary in extreme conditions, such as steep hills or where there is an excessive amount of water runoff.
• A single coat has a life span of 4 – 5 years.
• A double coat has a life span of 8 – 10 years.
• After a driveway is chip sealed, it will only require a single coat chip seal to renew it.
Process:
• Chip Seal requires the existing base to be solid.
• If there are muddy places in driveway, it may be necessary to add stone before chip sealing to obtain a strong base.
• After base is determined to be sufficient, the driveway will be graded.
• A truck will spray hot liquid asphalt.
• A layer of stone will then be added to the asphalt while it is still hot.
• Finally, the driveway will be rolled to help lock the stone into the liquid asphalt.
Note: We place more stone than necessary so that the liquid asphalt is completely covered. Initially, there will be stones that are loose and not imbedded into the asphalt. This is done to ensure that liquid asphalt is not exposed.
